Some didn't make it, some did not fly as it turned out to be a challenging weekend. The US Team was training at Cordele this weekend. We got to sit in on their briefings every morning. Was very interesting and informative. Launch grids were pretty large, but the ground crews made short work of it all. Yikes, there were some nice gliders there. Saturday was a challenging day. Weak low lift, plus some wind. There was only one decent thermal near the field, which led to a fairly interesting prestart gaggle. I didn’t stop to count, but there were easily 15 gliders in it at times, maybe more. Then when the US Team gate opened, they were gone, in an instant. Was cool to watch. Stuart Venters made it around but didn't quite make minimum distance. Colin Mead and Roger Thiemann landed out. (BTW, Roger landed on the prettiest field I have seen. The grass looked like carpet - a Bermuda sod farm. And he didn’t leave a single mark). Most of the rest of us turned back. Dieter however made it around, making it look easy, flying 67 miles and going deep into the turn points. The US team had similar results. They had a simple out and back twice around. They called it after one lap. I think half landed out. One of the juniors landed in a soft field. Glider, trailer and truck all sunk to their axles in mud. About 10 people, helped by Team GTA, finally got him out late Sunday. Sunday was called due to low lift and lots of wind. Two 21 meter JS 1's managed a 37 km task. That said it all. Monday looked pretty poor early, but as the hours passed it started looking better. Winds kicked up a bit so the runway was switched - enter the elephant walk to the far end. A short task was called and 4 GTA gliders took off – 2EZ, BZ, XX and C5. BZ apparently saw something interesting on the ground past the 3rd turn point and decided to land and check it out. 2EZ, sporting his rarely used long tips, made it around, going deep into both turnpoints. C5 also made it around, and was apparently enjoying the view, as he floated slowly and gently back to the field. Even with less than ideal conditions, it was a fun, safe weekend. Thanks to all who made the effort to come. Thanks, Chuck. It was a challenging weekend for sure. 3 elephant walks, high winds, lots o'clouds, and several landouts, but I am proud of the intrepid GTA'ers that stuck it out and showed the US team how we roll.
