Monroe GTA report: Saturday, September 17 was a fine day of soaring. As is common of good Uvalde days, we had a solid low clouds overcast until 10:00 am, promising great cu markers later on. The overcast lifted at 11:00 and became a nice cu field at 2,500’ AGL. We waited for the bases to rise to an estimated 3,000’ AGL (as indicated by the temperature-dewpoint spread on my Kestrel instrument) and launched Sean Goggins as a sniffer at 12:30. When the tow pilot reported that Sean released at 3,000’, we immediately started the competition launch without needing a report from Sean… The launch was very efficient: Lou Aull short-field landed the Pawnee on Rwy 3 and by the time he taxied the short distance back, the 3 person launch crew (Tailer, Hooker, Runner) had the glider ready. We used competition launch procedures (just a continuous run to take-up slack and start with no pause). The wing runner was none other than Bill Sanduski, who at 80 years of age can still launch the entire grid! He did it by merely balancing the wings (not leveling the wings) and just releasing the glider when the tow plane stretched the rope. No more than one step required, so Bill didn’t wear himself out too much… By using the above procedure, we were able to launch three gliders within each jump plane cycle. We coordinated very well with the SDM boogie. We turned left on take-off to our glider drop zone drop zone to the Southwest and landed the towplane with a straight in approach to RWY 3 from our drop zone. Meanwhile, the jump plane turned right after take-off and stayed to the East and Northeast with a left turn to land on RWY 21. The start cylinder was set to the South/Southwest so in effect the gliders and the jumpers were operating diametrically opposed to each other with no conflicts at any time. To further help the no conflict policy, we worked out with Bill Scott and Andrew Provine that the jump plane (the short field capable Caravan, not the King Air) would take-off from the first intersection 400’ down the runway. Thus we had our own “private” staging area from the keyhole and could stage and hook-up behind the jump plane take-offs. Both classes had long MAT tasks – A Class 120 miles, minimum time 2:30 hours, and B Class 80 mile, minimum time 80 miles. Cloud bases were 4,400’ AGL when the classes started between 13:35 and 13:50. Bases slowly rose to near 5,000’ AGL and the lift was still strong when Tom West landed WW near 6:00 pm to cook for us! Chris Ruf won A Class, with Dieter Jaeger (2nd) and Carsten Schraeder (3rd ) within two mph of his speed. Chip Haskell won B Class in 2MG with Larry Goddard coaching. Chip averaged 40:1 glide ratio in cruise by following the lift lines of the cloud streets. Who says the K21 is not a XC glider? Michael Abell, in his first GTA with the new Discus, took second place in B Class. See scores below. Congrats to all!!! The day ended in fine MGSA tradition with an excellent Burger and Brats dinner organized by Tom and with many contributors. Many members contributed to the great day: Matt Salley as OD, Bill Sandusky, Wayne, Hoover, Tom West as indefatigable starters on the Hooker, Tailer, Runner Team. They were substituted from time to time by others but I believe that Bill Sandusky got the most playing time. Lou Aull towed in proper contest style and got the cycle time to under six minutes. Please refer to Matt Salley’s OD report for other participants and non-GTA flights. Lastly, on Sunday we had a full crew of tow pilot (Tom West), OD (Rich Kennedy), helper extraordinaire (Hartley) and all the racers who showed up despite the certainty of rain. We held the pilot’s meeting at 11 am with much review and analysis of the prior day’s race. Finally as the rain started at about 12:00 we called the day off. Hartley and Rich and Tom worked on needed maintenance of the club gliders while the racers held the pilot’s meeting. Despite no possibility of flying, it was great to see that everyone showed up and worked, instead of us remotely calling the day off. Great club fellowship!!! Fernando B.
