Thanks to the Southern Eagles Club members who provided us with a great racing weekend at their brand new place. Roosevelt is a beautiful airport, with a HUGE hangar and lots of potential. SES really spoiled us with lunch brought in both days, a great local restaurant for dinner on Saturday, electricity for the RVs and shower onsite, place in the hangar for some of the GTAers to park their ship overnight, and great support for the races. Saturday was a good day, with cloud bases between 4700' and 5200' MSL and some good streets. We called a 2.5-hr TAT, which we later reduced to a 2-hr MAT in the air due to the earlier-than-planned appearance of very tall Cus and Congestus in several sectors. Good call as it turned out, as everyone completed and gliders were just back in their trailer or in the hangar when one of these overdeveloping Cus brought some gusts and rain to the field. The NAM and the RUC forecasts for Sunday were almost opposite, booming day by the NAM, crappy by the RUC. So we started optimistically with the 2.5-hr TAT call of the previous day. Things ended up a bit in between the RUC and the NAM. A thick overcast was covering the local area and It took a long time for things to get cooking and for enough convection to get established, during which time we patiently waited in the air, progressively postponing the start and decreasing the task time. Finally, we settled for a gate opening at 3:00 PM with a task time of 1.25-hr and an increased circle around the second turnpoint at Lagrange. With about 4500' cloudbase, the task was basically doable without getting out of gliding range from home, provided !! however !! that one could top a thermal not too far from the first turnpoint cylinder to punch it and retreat upwind toward Roosevelt. I turned back 2 miles from it on the first attempt, and restarted at 4:05PM. This time, a good cloud street basically carried me to the first cylinder and about half the second leg. A couple more clouds and I could punch the second circle. I kept going a bit inside the cylinder toward some great-looking clouds, that actually worked to top off at 5200' MSL. I bumped a couple more clouds after that on the third leg, which were much weaker but just enough to put me on a final glide in smooth air to the third cylinder and back home. The flight on task was actually pretty easy and fast using the streets. The challenge of the day was the waiting before the streets got established... Thanks to the SES guys and gals for a fun weekend. See you at Tullahoma in a couple of weeks for the 3-day 4th of July GTA. François All, Results from two pretty interesting (i.e. tough) race days at Roosevelt Memorial (in the heart of Zombie country). Especially Sunday (when you hear Francois say 'that was work', you know it was challenging.
