We really broke in the new field this weekend. Some of us camped at the field Friday night and ended up having an impromptu fish fry in the hangar thanks to master fisherman/chef Glen Klingshirn. Good food, good drinks, and good friends with lots to talk about. The temperature was perfect and we just set up tables and chairs in the hangar and relaxed while Glen manned the frypan. Francois Pin, U.S. Soaring champion and world team member joined us. The rest of the GTA racers started arriving pretty early Saturday and got their pilots meeting going in the club room. Long time member, Rick Abercrombie, was a pleasant surprise, showing up in his show-stopping red and black Luscombe Silvaire (great to see you Rick). We brought out a sandwich platter, chips, and drinks and had a nice lunch before getting operations underway. The racers went racing (more like storm dodging), Glen got the students in the air, Charlie spent the afternoon in the air with people who dropped by for rides. Mark was kept busy in the towplane. Well, actually, although lift conditions were challenging, most everything that went up stayed there for long flights. Eventually a strong gust front with following rain moved in and we had an exciting few minutes loading 9 gliders into the hangar. Yes, 9 gliders in the hangar! Our nice shower got a workout as people cleaned up for dinner. A bunch of us reconvened the party at Meriwether Steak Company and had a great time there. Excellent food, superb service and a fun atmosphere. Perfect way to cap the day. Several members camped Saturday night. Sunday was pretty much like Saturday, except for even more public attention and walk-ons. We brought in lunch again, Steve Brown towed, Tim McGowin sacrificed a day racing to instruct. Mark flew down in his beautiful J3 Cub. By the way, Mark has put together an elegant tailwheel installation on the K7. Now she rolls instead of bumping on her rear like a hoppytoad. It is not a swiveling wheel, for reasons of directional control, so we still need to lift the tail to turn the glider when ground handling. Eventually, all the racers landed, and the last instructional flight finished. My wife and I were actually sad to be leaving the airport this evening. This weekend was a great start on transforming our club into a really fun, active place where the members want to be all the time. If we can build and maintain this momentum, we will be there sooner than we could have imagined. I think we did in the neighborhood of 22 tows for the weekend. I have to admit, I was afraid that moving to Warm Springs would isolate us and take us even more out of the public eye than we were in Lagrange. I could not have been more wrong. I did not realize that Roosevelt airport is right in the Warm Springs-Pine Mountain tourist loop. On weekends, a lot of tourist traffic circulates between Pine Mountain and Warm Springs with Callaway Gardens, the Pine Mountain Ridge, and Roosevelt’s “Little White House” being significant attractions. Much of that traffic comes right by the airport. Our operation is very visible and is attracting attention. A bit more sprucing up around the airport and a colorful, attractive sign will have people piling in. Special thanks to Mark Blace, Glen Klingshirn, Mike Pesak, Steve and Robert Kempf, Charlie Finn, Barry Gazzard, Chris Ruf (great job decorating the club rooms), Darius Gazinschi, Steve Browne, Brent Gourly, George Wood, Bill Buck, Dieter Jaeger, my wife Mary Jo, Chuck Patterson, Francois and others who have slipped my mind at the moment. Ya’ll made the weekend work and you made it fun.
