Since you asked, I agree and comply with the request for a story, and hope this will start a (required) tradition of a post on the day's story by GTA day winners from here on. Here is for last Sunday: It was a fun day. Good practice. Sorry many could not join us. We delayed takeoff until after 13:30 to let the cloudbase go up a bit. By 14:10 we all were launched and getting about 4200' MSL with about 2 kt under mostly reliable clouds, so we decided to open the gate at 14:30 for a 2.5 hr AAT to Corntassel with 15 mile radius, 411x64 with 5 mile radius, Monroe with 10 mile radius, and return. The first leg North went OK, with a few 1.5-2 kt to be found, but cloudbase was getting progressively lower toward the North, so I turned near the little Tennessee River NE of Corntassel. I did a couple of slides down to 2800' MSL over the "knobblies" west of Tellico Plains, but the clouds were mostly reliable and still looked great on the return south, that is, until about Etowah. From there to 411x64 and back, it was low and slow, 1 kt welcome, under wimpy clouds due to the overcast advancing from the South. I kept my glide calculator set on Chilhowee... just in case. Having turned 411x64, and moving back north past Chilhowee, things got better again near Etowah, and the ride to near Monroe and back was good, although still with a few low spots that demanded accepting less-than-optimal thermals due to the no-crew status (actually, crew at home expecting pilot's return early enough to go out for anniversary dinner, NOT landout). Overall, the bases weren't super high, and the thermals not of the rocket booster type, but the clouds were typically working and in some cases with nice alignments that made for a fun ride. Next weekend does not look bad for the GTA at Moontown. Hope more of you guys can join us there.
