Chris, Werner said I should write something up about my flight in the GTA at Eagleville back in July, so here's what I have. Sunday I took off with the intention of combining the GTA task with an FAI 300K triangle, with FAI start and finish at Hunter. This was tricky since I had to start the GTA task within parameters, run to hunter, find a thermal close to the start cylinder, pull the spoilers to get down to the FAI start height, go back to my thermal, then start on course for the 300K. Luckily it was an incredible day, with 6-7kt lift to 9,000msl. I'm still pretty new to cross country soaring, so I chose to stay high and fly conservative; I spent nearly all my 4 hours on course between 6-9K (if that won't spoil you, I don't know what will). It was 112 degrees on the surface so naturally it was quite a bit more comfortable too! The run from Lee down to Amacher was a fast one, mostly streeting at 8,000ft with beautiful cu's everywhere. Down close to Amacher, Werner and I heard Bill Elliott and Dick Butler in the area, where we hoped to catch a glimpse of Concordia, however they were already southbound so no such luck. When I rounded the corner at Maury Co I let myself get a little lower, down to around 5,000ft. That was definitely a mistake, it seemed the workable lift was getting higher as the day got later. I had glide to Hunter, but not all the way home, so I started searching around Maury Co airport for my final climb. Unfortunately (as I found out later), I missed the FAI observation zone at Maury by about 220 feet, but I did dig to make glide home close to Hunter as Werner caught up with me. So, the GTA task made for a great day, however my Gold distance and Diamond goal will have to wait for another day. Had I made the Maury county turnpoint, I would have laid claim to the open class, 15M, and sports class 300K state speed records (though they would have been taken away 10 minutes later by Werner anyway). I don't feel at all that my performance was an exceptional one. Bill Elliott posted his flight on the OLC and he was over 80mph. (Francois Pin would have really nuked this day) I figured it was an 80+ mph day based on a lot of contest towing I've done, so I'll attribute my speed to the curve of the day and a healthy soaring history that my ASW20 brings to the mix. I look forward to more flights like these, and a lot more to learn and experience. Fun weekend.
