Sunday, September 17 ---------- We awoke to somewhat warmer temps and cirrus to the north. The cirrus gradually moved south during the day, but there were cus and good lift throughout most of the task area until ~3:30-4:00. Task: A - 2.5 hour MAT: Puckett-Tullahoma-Fayetteville-Cedar Glade B - 2.5 hour MAT: Puckett-Tullahoma-Gibson-Lewisburg John was first to start in A class, followed closely by Bob and Werner. Francois and I started about 12-15 minutes later. There were lots of honest cus fed by 5-6 knots thermals, so the first leg went by in a flash. The cus began to thin out a bit on the way to Fayetteville, but climbs were were still ~4 knots or better. After Fayetteville, we were able to climb high enough to easily glide between the few widely spaced cus on the way to Cedar Glade, but the cirrus cover had grown thicker and the cus began to dry up. After turning Cedar Glade, I was tiptoeing toward Puckett when I saw FP high and racing toward Eagleville. I gathered my resolve and pressed on, finally spotting Francois thermaling under a cloud near the airport. It was a good one, so I took it to ~7K and from there made a final glide around Shelbyville and Gibson, ending up at Puckett a couple of minutes under time, but happy to be home! Everyone else also flew well and made it back. JJ was the only B class competitor, so he nailed down his position as 2006 GTA B class Champ with a fine flight in which he averaged ~37 mph. Not bad for a guy who made his first cross country flight in 2005! Once again, congratulations JJ! Thanks to Bill and Kathy MacFarlane for hosting the race and allowing us to enjoy their facilities and the beautifully manicured runway and grounds. We also thank Ron Tuttle, the other tow pilots, and the Eagleville pilots who helped organize and run this event. If you haven't flown an Eagleville race, you've missed some great soaring and wonderful hospitality at a very nice site. I recommend that you make plans to fly there next season. --------------------------------------------- Closing Thought: This race is one more example of what I've begun to call the Elliott Principle: "The scorer always wins." ;-) See you at the Oktoberfest!
