Saturday, September 16 --------------------------------- Eight pilots showed up to compete, six in A class and two in B. Francois Pin (FP), Werner Ruegger (EL), Michael Poe (MP), Bob Richards (NX), John Murphy (SRK), and Yours Truly made up the A class roster, and Jean-Jacques Malosse (S4) and Scott Meyers (Z2) fought it out in B class. Tasks: A - 3 hour TAT: Puckett - Winchester (15) - Hazel Green (25) - Puckett B - 2.5 hour MAT: Puckett - Shelbyville - Lewisburg - Puckett - Shelbyville - Lewisburg A Class Five of us made it to over 6K before the start, so there was the usual jockeying to stay below the 6K start cylinder height for the requisite two minutes. The run to Winchester was mainly in the blue, but relatively fast. Climb rates picked up as we neared the plateau and the whole gang went well into the Winchester TA to get to the high clouds, where we were rewarded with 5-6 kt climbs (with bursts to 7 and 8!). All of us then flew south along the edge of the plateau until Bob and Francois headed toward Hazel Green. Michael, Werner, and I continued south toward Moontown until Michael turned north of Moontown and Werner turned over the airport. I flew toward the north end of the N-S ridge east of Huntsville where I found a 5-knotter that I worked to over 6K. From there, I cruised south along the ridge, hitting lift all the way to the south edge of the TA, then turned around and ran back north. By the time I was abeam Moontown, it was ~4:00 and I had 65 miles to go. I think everyone would agree that the air on the way back was something less than effervescent. For most of us, the final leg was a series of slow glides punctuated by climbs in 1-3 knot lift. Bob and Werner got low and found nothing so Bob went down at Lewisburg airport and Werner landed at the Pleasant Grove airstrip. John was last to take off after several frustrating delays, so he failed to get a decent start. Francois, Michael and I were the three finishers. In the B class, JJ flew to all the mandatory TPs and then some, averaging over 38 mph to win the day. Unfortunately, Steve suffered a PDA failure after turning Shelbyville and elected to return to Puckett.
