Saturday's GTA races at Etowah Bend, GA. Congratulations to Bill Elliott and Dennis Linnekin for winning the A and B classes, respectively. At this time, Bill is the overall A class leader. Saturday was hot and humid and the flacid cu offered little promise of good soaring. Once the race got underway, however, the clouds began to street, the thermals got organized, and the A class pilots began averaging climbs of 3.5 to four knots. The A class was assigned a two-hour Turn Area Task (TAT) from Etowah Bend to Calhoun to Cedartown to Rome and back, about 140 miles if one flew to the back of each TA. Bill averaged 67 mph true to win the day, followed by Chris Ruf, who ran his Mosquito at ~60 mph. Dieter Jaeger was third in his ASW-27, followed by Yours Truly in the LS-8. Al Tyler (Ventus 2a) and Rob Ware (LS-6) clocked in at ~57 and 50 mph, respectively. I made a big boo-boo by finishing about a wingspan under the 1000' minimum finish height after a 30 mile final glide. The eight-minute penalty (roll time finish plus three minutes) dropped me from a potential second to fourth place. Ouch! JJ, Ted Mavrotheris (Russia AC-4), and Dennis Linnekin (LS-4), made up the B class, which was assigned a 1:45 minute Modified Assigned Task (MAT) with mandatory turnpoints at Barnsley Golf Course, Wallace airfield, and Rome. JJ flew two extra turnpoints, Dennis won in his LS-4. Unfortunately for Ted, he couldn't connect with lift after his first tow, then suffered an electrical system failure on his second. Sunday's forecast called for rain, so we didn't fly. Several pilots have posted their flights to the OLC.
