Subject: Cordele Racing -- What a weekend! GTA 2006 kicked off this passed weekend in beautiful Cordele with 8 pilots to get the year started. The weather was really tempting us to second guess as those of us that drove in Friday night hit rain. However, we awoke to a gorgeous day that began showing Cu by 11am. We called a TAT … Perry, Tifton and return. The day was gangbusters to Perry. I turned Perry (38.5 ml) requiring only one thermal climb of 463 ft. Everyone was reporting “okay” with delight in their voice. Then, the day began to cycle and caught us all off guard. I began transitioning to the west and the sun gliding nearly 31 miles and finally was rewarded at 1200’ with a 3.5kt thermal back to cloud base. Several were not so lucky and landed back at Cordele; 01 landed safely in a field close by. Three successfully made the Tifton turn area and completed the task. Yours truly received 1000 points with a speed of 65 mph raw followed by “6 India” and Delta Sierra. We had a delightful dinner at the new Cajun restaurant across the street from the hotel with smiles on our faces and glad to be together again doing what we love. Sunday’s sun came up to another beautiful day. The BLIP report was somewhat better and we had plenty of Cu by 11am again. We called a 2 ˝ hour MAT with Tifton and Rochelle as the first two required TPs. With cloudbase at 5000’, most of the fleet headed out by 1:35 as the gate opened. Tifton was rounded quickly with Cu everywhere and average climb rates of 5 knots or better. At Rochelle, everyone took different paths. I continued on to Perry and then towards Vet Mem where I had a climb that increased in climb rate through 7 kts and put me on final glide around Warwick. I completed the task with a raw speed of 70 mph; however, the day was good and I knew others must have had great runs too. DS turned his fastest speed ever in the Ka-6 with a raw speed of 53 mph (64.7 hmph) eclipsing my notable speed (61.8 hmph) by nearly 5% -- well done Dave. I think the key was staying South of Cordele as he did and staying under more clouds. We had the same average climb rate of 4.4 kts; however, DS managed to thermal only 18% to my 22%. “Hotel 6” buzzed his Mosquito around the course at 62 mph for a well run third. H6 is starting strong this year. Special thanks to Linda and Phil for coming down to tow (and running the rope). Linda did a wonderful job of towing in spite of the crosswind take-offs and displayed her prowess with 6 minute turnarounds getting us all in the air in roughly 50 minutes both days. IGC files, an excel spreadsheet of the scores and the Winscore file are attached. Note: this year we will have to compute more scores by hand as the latest version of Winscore has removed some abilities to tweak the scoring. What a weekend. See you at Chilhowee!
